President’s Message

PMI Nashville Offers Advertising/Marketing Opportunities

By: Faye Smith, PMP- PMI Nashville President

The PMI Nashville Chapter has a rapidly growing membership with over 325 members. This reflects positively on our initiatives to educate, increase the awareness and value of PMI in the community, in the industries, in the media, in schools and universities. With this increase comes the need to position the chapter for the future and address the needs of the membership. One such effort has been in developing our policies and procedures.

Recently, the PMI Nashville Chapter Board of Directors released their policy on advertising/marketing. The policy offers organizations an opportunity to advertise via PMI's bi-monthly newsletter and the website. There are approximately 1,100 on the weekly notifications list with various industries represented.

PMI recognizes the challenges organizations face. Some organizational challenges addressed by advertising with the PMI Nashville Chapter include the following:

·          Increasing brand recognition for your company, products and services

·          Attracting prospective clients to your website to generate sales leads and prospects

·          Identifying and utilizing cost effective media to attract business from a specific targeted region or industry

Getting your products and services in front of 1,100 advisors and/or decision makers, or a targeted group of key people from specific industry groups or sectors is critical to your effective marketing campaign. PMI Nashville can help you meet those needs with a tailored program of advertising.

Newsletter advertisers should contact newsletter@pminashville.com and Web advertisers should contact web@pminashville.com.

JUNE IN REVIEW

June’s Topic

An Overview of Risk Management and Risk-Driven Scheduling

Speaker

B.J. Safdie

Topic Summary

In a perfect world, project managers have an easy job because projects always go exactly as planned. Unexpected events never arise and all projects finish on time and on budget. Sadly, our world is far from perfect. Consequently, much of the work of project management is directed toward establishing and maintaining predictability - ensuring that actual effort and cost are in line with estimates, and managing any variance. Most project plans include a very detailed WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) that outlines precisely the expected flow of events. They often also contain built-in contingency time, or padding to allow for some element of variance. But, what about the truly unexpected? What about those elements of the project that make project managers and team members uncomfortable from the "get go?" How do you plan for these things - the unknown or unexpected?

Risk Management is an invaluable tool that helps management and project teams to identify and deal with the unexpected. While no one can identify every possible risk to a project, the Risk Management discipline allows teams to systematically plan for, and authoritatively communicate, issues or events which may threaten the plan. Risks are identified, evaluated, and mitigation plans are created and executed. Risk Management is a planning tool and a continuous process practiced all throughout the project. Risk-driven Scheduling takes high-risk items and moves them forward in the project schedule to help eliminate or identify "show-stoppers" early - minimizing any loss.

~B. J. Safdie has been in the software industry for over 18 years. He worked his way up though the ranks in his career, holding positions from programmer to manager to Vice President of Engineering to CTO of Services for a $150 million software company. He has been focused on organizational leadership and software process improvement for more than 12 years, and has presented at events including the Managers' Technology Forum in New York and Networld+Interop. He is currently Principal Consultant for MetaManagement Solutions (www.MetaManagement.com), and Program Chairman for the Central Tennessee Section of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

Preparing For an IT Manager Role

8 PDUs earned upon completion

Instructor: Mike Sisco – MDE Enterprises, CEO

PMI Nashville invites you to attend a one-day seminar Friday, September 26. The informal training seminar, Preparing For an IT Manager Role, will help you position yourself for an IT Manager role by discovering the traits that are important for success. You will also gain insight into the steps to prepare you for the job. PMI members will receive a discount.

Mike Sisco, a former IT Manager and CIO with more than 20 years experience, will be the instructor. Becoming an IT Manager is more easily facilitated if the candidate has a good idea about how to manage technology resources and exhibits managerial traits. Most young managers take the job understanding little of what managing an organization is about. Project Managers are excellent candidates for an IT Manager role and this class provides focused insight specifically to help the Project Manager prepare for and position himself or herself for an IT Manager position.

The seminar will be held in LaVergne, Tennessee at Square D (295 Tech Park Drive, Suite 100). Cost of the one-day seminar includes lunch, class-break refreshments, and course materials including one of Mike Sisco’s books, IT Management-101: Fundamentals to Achieve More. Remember, PMI members receive a discount.

Registration is limited to 30 people, so please register by September 12, 2003 to ensure your place. More information can be found at PMI Nashville’s website www.pminashville.com. You may also contact our chapter’s Director of Education and Training, Brenda Coons, PMP at Brenda.coons@eds.com or 615-271-3794.

Inaugural IT Manager Development Institute Complete

Mike Sisco, CEO of MDE Enterprises, held the inaugural IT MANAGER DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE program the week of June 23. Participants received practical insight on what to do to achieve success as an IT Manager, including tools and examples that will help any level manager achieve more.

The Institute takes a unique approach to help ensure each participant truly does achieve more success upon completion. Additional 90-day mentoring support, a customized 30-Day Action Plan for each participant, and a focus on Mike's Top 50 Technology Cost Savings Strategies virtually guarantees every participant will identify immediate opportunities that more than pay for the Institute program fee within 90 days. Every participant also becomes a lifetime member of MDE's IT Manager Round Table, a forum designed to provide members ongoing support and networking opportunities from peers and experts that are involved with the Institute and MDE programs.

Mike and his family moved "back home" to middle Tennessee in January of this year after being away for 30 years. He has dedicated his efforts toward the development of products and services that help IT managers achieve more success in today's complex business environment. Mike has written ten books of his IT Manager Development Series, and published his tools developed to assist in managing IT organizations in his IT Manager ToolKit. He will also launch a 12-course program with Belmont University this fall that focuses on IT Manager professional development. His real world management and CIO experience is being translated into meaningful programs that empower IT managers to do more for their company.

Comments from participants in the inaugural program included:

"One of the most useful aspects of the class was the organization of IT management areas such as, Infrastructure, Business Applications, etc. into a coherent framework. This clarified the business of managing IT. I am excited about having all these new tools to use as an IT Manager."

Anne Pouliot, PMP – PMI Nashville Chapter Member

"Mike, the Institute was well worth the time and expense to attend. The material you provided will help me improve my IT organization upon returning to my country."

Edward Makwaia, IT Director - Central Bank of Tanzania, Africa

"The IT Manager Development Institute was invaluable for me. I feel that I grew tremendously and now know much more about the right things to do as an IT Manager. Thank you for such a wonderful experience."

Richard Wollenberger, IT Manager - St Louis, MO

The IT Manager Development Institute will be offered in the Nashville area two times a year. The next Institute is scheduled the week of October 13. Additional information is available at www.mde.net/institute. PMI Chapter members receive a 20% discount when using the discount code "PMI".

PMI Global Congress 2003 – Celebrate the Best in Project Management

By: PMI® Headquarters

The Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Global Congress 2003–North America presents a unique opportunity for those interested or involved in the project management profession to expand their network of contacts and hone their business skills.

PMI anticipates 4,000 attendees at the two-and-a-half-day congress (September 21-23), taking place at the Baltimore Convention Center, which is the culmination of many PMI events occurring at the convention center between September 18 and 25, 2003. These other PMI events, which require additional registration and fees to the congress, include 40 PMI® SeminarsWorld® courses, a PMI Leadership Meeting (for PMI Component organization leaders), and the PMI Research Program and PMI Standards Program open working sessions.

Patrick Lencioni, author of the BusinessWeek and Wall Street Journal best seller, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team (2002), has developed several original leadership theories based on his consulting work to CEOs and their teams around the world. Many of his theories have been published in Harvard Business Review, the Drucker Foundation's Leader-to-Leader, Executive Excellence and the Human Resource Executive.

Congress participants can expect a high-impact, high-quality professional development experience, as they choose from among 80 presentations in eight targeted areas of focus. Each focus area was chosen from PMI member submissions and spotlight the emerging trends, latest project management culture and examines time-tested best practices.

PMI traditionally boasts one of the world’s largest project management tradeshows and this year is no different. Seventy-five vendors, from large corporations to emerging new companies, will be showcasing the very latest in project management tools and resources in the congress exhibit hall. Attendees will have the opportunity to see first hand the products and services necessary for today’s busy project professionals.

Networking opportunities for attendees at the congress will begin much earlier than usual because of a Web-based networking tool called “Meet Attendees” that participants can take advantage of as part of their congress experience. Participants can send each other e-mails straight from the congress Web site, giving them a jump on sharing their common professional interests and project-related challenges with one another. Several on-site networking events are planned for congress attendees as well.

For further information about PMI Global Congress 2003–North America, or to register online, visit the PMI Web site at www.pmi.org.

PDU Claims – Important Deadline Clarification

By: PMI® Headquarters

There is an official deadline for Professional Development Unit (PDU) submissions applied to continuing certification requirements (CCR). All PDU claims applied to a specific CCR cycle must be submitted within one year of the cycle expiration date. PDU claims submitted more than one year following the expiration date of the applicable renewal cycle will not be credited toward the required or transferable PDUs earned for that cycle. For example, if a PMP's CCR cycle expiration date is December 31, 2007, all of the claims that they wish to use for that cycle must be reported no later than December 31, 2008. To avoid suspension of their professional credential, PMPs must submit the necessary PDUs by the expiration date of their CCR cycle.  PMPs who do not submit the necessary overdue PDUs by their PMP suspension expiration date will lose their certification.

For more information, access PMI Headquarters’ website at http://www.pmi.org/info/PDC_PMPCCR.asp.

Seven of them are involved in a single SIG area, Information Systems. Our chapter leadership is coordinating an organizational get-together for them that will be held in the next couple of weeks.

Three others expressed separate interests in the areas of Oil and Gas, Engineering, and Risk Management.  We’re looking for ways to plug these PMs in with others who have similar interests.

A number of the seven IS respondents were members of the Healthcare and/or Women in Project Management SIGS, as well. As they socialize their common interests in Information Systems project management, they will likely find many lively topics to share.

If you would like to get to know other project managers in your specialty area, whether Oil and Gas, Information Systems, or any other areas, call me during the day at 287-2212. I’ll do my best to find others to put you in touch with and help with coordinating SIG meetings.
