PMI Nashville Offers
Advertising/Marketing Opportunities By:
Faye Smith, PMP- PMI Nashville President The
PMI Nashville Chapter has a rapidly growing membership with over 325
members. This reflects positively on our initiatives to educate,
increase the awareness and value of PMI in the community, in the industries,
in the media, in schools and universities. With this increase comes
the need to position the chapter for the future and address the needs of
the membership. One such effort has been in developing our policies and
procedures. Recently, the PMI Nashville Chapter Board of
Directors released their policy on advertising/marketing. The policy offers
organizations an opportunity to advertise via PMI's bi-monthly
newsletter and the website. There are approximately 1,100 on the weekly
notifications list with various industries represented. PMI recognizes the challenges organizations
face. Some organizational challenges addressed by advertising with the
PMI Nashville Chapter include the following: ·
Increasing brand
recognition for your company, products and services ·
Attracting
prospective clients to your website to generate sales leads and prospects ·
Identifying and
utilizing cost effective media to attract business from a specific targeted
region or industry Getting your products and services in front of 1,100
advisors and/or decision makers, or a targeted group of key people from
specific industry groups or sectors is critical to your effective marketing
campaign. PMI Nashville can help you meet those needs with a tailored program
of advertising. Newsletter advertisers should contact newsletter@pminashville.com and Web
advertisers should contact web@pminashville.com. |

If you haven’t visited the new PMI Nashville Chapter website, then you may not know what all the fuss is about. The new website officially launched on June 17 and has already received over 23,000 hits. Visitors to the site will notice a new look and feel; improved usability; improved site performance; home page advertisement for sponsors; fast access to information from the home page; and the ability to customize font size.
Work
on the new site began last year under the leadership of Julie Moore, Director
of Web Administration for the 2002 Board of Directors. Both Julie and Kim
Nichols, Director of Web Administration for 2003, worked with two volunteer
developers – Brandy Beasley and Kyle Thomson. You can read Brandy and Kyle’s
interview in last month’s newsletter by going to http://pminashville.com/ and selecting
the May/June 2003 newsletter from the Publications section. Advertise your products and services on the new and improved PMI Nashville website. See the article on the advertising/marketing policy. PMBOK Tune Up Workshop a Success for Nashville
Chapter Members Jay
Ress of TMA Seminars conducted a three-hour "PMBOK Tune Up"
Workshop for members of the Nashville Chapter of the Project Management
Institute on June 4. Richard Singletary, AVP-IT&S at HCA hosted the event
and provided a first-rate facility for the twenty-five people in attendance. The
workshop presented the PMBOK in a logical sequence, focusing on themes and
knowledge that will help PMI members pass the PMP Certification Exam. Jay
also shared some strategies for taking the exam. Spirited audience
participation yielded a number of helpful study suggestions and resources.
Overall, all but two of the attendees "Agreed Very Strongly" that
they would recommend this seminar to others (the other two "somewhat
agreed"). A
few quotes from Seminar Evaluations included: ·
Jay
Ress, PMP ·
"Thank
you so much. You have opened my eyes to new information, mind set,
Left to right: Brandy Beasley and Kyle Thomson –
volunteer web developers ·
Instructor
was "...excellent - his knowledge of subject; ability to understand
participant's questions; assessment of audience and their needs and excellent
communication skills made attending this seminar worthwhile and a
pleasure." ·
"Good;
a worthwhile endeavor!" ·
Instructor
was "...very receptive to questions: made a special effort to meet our
needs" ·
"Well
done! Good job on fielding classroom questions and interaction." ·
"Great

thanks to Richard Singletary of HCA and Faye Smith, President of the PMI
Nashville Chapter, for their contributions to the success of this event. Inaugural IT Manager Development Institute
Complete Mike
Sisco, CEO of MDE Enterprises, held the inaugural IT MANAGER DEVELOPMENT
INSTITUTE program the week of June 23. Participants received practical
insight on what to do to achieve success as an IT Manager, including tools
and examples that will help any level manager achieve more. The
Institute takes a unique approach to help ensure each participant truly does
achieve more success upon completion. Additional 90-day mentoring support, a
customized 30-Day Action Plan for each participant, and a focus on Mike's Top 50 Technology Cost Savings Strategies
virtually guarantees every participant will identify immediate opportunities
that more than pay for the Institute program fee within 90 days. Every
participant also becomes a lifetime member of MDE's IT Manager Round Table,
a forum designed to provide members ongoing support and networking
opportunities from peers and experts that are involved with the Institute and
MDE programs.
Mike
and his family moved "back home" to middle Tennessee in January of
this year after being away for 30 years. He has dedicated his efforts toward
the development of products and services that help IT managers achieve more
success in today's complex business environment. Mike has written ten books
of his IT Manager Development Series,
and published his tools developed to assist in managing IT organizations in
his IT Manager ToolKit. He will also launch a 12-course
program with Belmont University this fall that focuses on IT Manager
professional development. His real world management and CIO experience is
being translated into meaningful programs that empower IT managers to do more
for their company. Comments
from participants in the inaugural program included: "One of the most useful aspects of the class was
the organization of IT management areas such as, Infrastructure, Business
Applications, etc. into a coherent framework. This clarified the business of
managing IT. I am excited about having all these new tools to use as an IT
Manager." Anne Pouliot, PMP – PMI Nashville Chapter Member "Mike, the Institute was well worth the time and
expense to attend. The material you provided will help me improve my IT
organization upon returning to my country." Edward Makwaia, IT Director - Central Bank of Tanzania,
Africa "The IT Manager Development Institute was invaluable
for me. I feel that I grew tremendously and now know much more about the
right things to do as an IT Manager. Thank you for such a wonderful
experience." Richard Wollenberger, IT Manager - St Louis, MO The IT
Manager Development Institute will be offered in the Nashville area two times
a year. The next Institute is scheduled the week of October 13. Additional
information is available at www.mde.net/institute. PMI
Chapter members receive a 20% discount when using the discount code "PMI". New Luncheon Fee Structure In an effort to realign
the monthly chapter luncheons with a "Break Even" budget, the Board
has deemed it necessary to increase the price of the luncheons effective
July. With the improved lunch menu and an increase in the honorariums given
to presenters, the Board is continuing to provide the quality programs and
quality education deserving of the membership. Members taking advantage
of the early registration deadline will not experience an increase in
the luncheon fees. The new fee structure is as follows:
Early Registration (Wednesday prior to luncheon – RSVP to communications@pminashville.com) Members: $15.00 Non-Members:
$20.00 Late
Registration (includes walk-ins) Members: $20.00 Non-Members: $25.00 We appreciate your continued support. Questions may be addressed
to the PMI Nashville chapter treasurer at treasurer@pminashville.com.
Improve
Your Chances to Pass the PMP Certification Test Are
you thinking of taking the PMP certification test? You can improve your
chances of passing by joining a study group. PMP Study Groups provide a forum
for learning & sharing experiences and knowledge of the nine functional
areas of Project Management (according to the Project Management Body of
Knowledge or PMBOK). These study groups are self-directed and usually consist
of two to eight people who are actively seeking their PMP certification. The
group members usually take turns facilitating at least one study session,
which focuses on a specific PMBOK knowledge area. If anyone is interested in
joining a PMP Study group, please contact Brenda Coons, PMI Nashville
Education Director at Brenda.coons@eds.com. Be a PMI

Claims – Important Deadline Clarification By: PMI® Headquarters There is an official deadline
for Professional Development Unit (PDU) submissions applied to continuing
certification requirements (CCR). All PDU claims applied to a specific CCR
cycle must be submitted within one year of the cycle expiration date. PDU claims
submitted more than one year following the expiration date of the applicable
renewal cycle will not be credited toward the required or transferable PDUs
earned for that cycle. For example, if a PMP's CCR cycle expiration date is
December 31, 2007, all of the claims that they wish to use for that cycle
must be reported no later than December 31, 2008. To avoid suspension of
their professional credential, PMPs must submit the necessary PDUs by the
expiration date of their CCR cycle.
PMPs who do not submit the necessary overdue PDUs by their PMP
suspension expiration date will lose their certification. For more information, access
PMI Headquarters’ website at http://www.pmi.org/info/PDC_PMPCCR.asp. PMI

of the major benefits of being a PMI member is quick, easy access to the resources

Director of Marketing Are you aware that the WiPM SIG (specific interest
group) has a Yahoo Community? I can personally attest to the value of this
SIG. WiPM has a Mentoring Program and is conducting online PMP study groups. Looking for some PMP study tips? Have a project
management or career question? How about another perspective on a topic? Do
you want to network with other WiPM members in your geographic area? The
Yahoo Community is just the place for you. If you are a WiPM member, just click

to join this interactive virtual community. If you are not a WiPM SIG member, join today at www.pmi.org. The fall 2003 issue of the WiPM newsletter is being
dedicated to the topic of “Project Management and Strategic Planning”.
In an effort to increase global collaboration, the WiPM SIG is asking each of
the members to send any information they would like to share on this topic for
publication. Examples of the type of information WiPM SIG is looking for may
include, but not limited to: ·
Short articles about Strategic Planning (May include an
article that you found interesting, insights from personal experience, or
successful approach, etc.) ·
Strategic Planning tips and tricks ·
Strategic Planning success stories ·
Websites with information about Strategic Planning If this interests you, please
join the WiPM SIG. By: Paul Zitzmann, PMP – PMI Nashville Director of
SIG/Special Programs Ten project managers signed up to pursue local (SIG)
Specific Interest Group networking opportunities following the July PMI
Nashville luncheon. Seven of them are involved in a single SIG area,
Information Systems. Our chapter leadership is coordinating an organizational
get-together for them that will be held in the next couple of weeks. Three others expressed separate interests in the areas
of Oil and Gas, Engineering, and Risk Management. We’re looking for ways to plug these PMs in with others
who have similar interests. A number of the seven IS respondents were members of the Healthcare and/or Women in Project Management SIGS, as well. As they socialize their common interests in Information Systems project management, they will likely find many lively topics to share. If you would like to get to
know other project managers in your specialty area, whether Oil and Gas,
Information Systems, or any other areas, call me during the day at 287-2212.
I’ll do my best to find others to put you in touch with and help with
coordinating SIG meetings. |
